Is it possible, as one writer has suggested, that we have “lost the soul of America?” In the UK, any former semblance of a once Christian worldview and the freedom to express that worldview in the public square has, for all practical purposes, disappeared. Is the same thing happening in the US today?
Dr. Peter Jones recently published an article about this subject, A Culture Lost and a Call to Action in the Worldview Church Digest. He suggests that it may be time to change our focus from trying to “save the culture” to saving the church. In our attempts to be relevant in the church in America today, we may, in fact, have accomplished exactly the opposite. The cultural attitudes and views have so infiltrated the church that is has become irrelevant. Dr. Jones points to a failure in many of our churches “to understand and express the Christian cosmology [study of the universe/creation] presupposed in the Gospel.”
I urge you to read Dr. Jones’ article and share your thoughts about the need to understand the times and what call to action the church ought to embrace. This is an inter-generational issue and concern. Is the Bible true or not? If it is, then why are we so easily surrendering to the intentional silencing of free expression and religious liberty in this nation? And at what point does God finally “give us over” to our depravity as Paul describes in Romans 1?
Perhaps the bigger question is whether Western Christians even care. Perhaps we have become like the frog in pot about to be boiled to death without even knowing it.
