The Courageous Grandparenting seminar is the culmination of two decades of putting the principles for biblical grandparents into practice according to God’s Word, and then teaching others to do the same. The commands of God for grandparents are not much different from God’s commands to parents. The primary difference is really a difference of methodology (how we put it into practice), especially in a time when the nuclear family typically lives independent of the extended family.

This seminar is a 40,000-foot fly over of my book, Courageous Grandparenting. I believe this seminar can be a useful means to help you inspire, equip and mobilize the grandparents in your church and community to be intentional biblical grandparents. I think it is important that every attendee (or couple) who will be attending receive a copy of Courageous Grandparenting. In fact, if it is at all possible, I would urge you to get copies and ask your participants to read the book prior to participating in the event you will be hosting. Perhaps you can include the cost of the book in the fee for the Seminar.

This seminar is available two ways. First is a live version held at your church or organization presented by myself or one of my trusted ministry partners. Secondly, you can purchase a video version of the seminar to use for your small group or grandparent ministry.

How are the seminars different?

The most obvious difference is having a live speaker as opposed to watching a video. However, the topics are the same and the video was recorded at a live Courageous Grandparenting Seminar by Cavin Harper, author of Courageous Grandparenting.

The live seminar starts typically on a Saturday at 8:30 am or 9:00 am and concludes between 3:30 and 4:00 pm. This best accomodates the travel schedule for the speaker.

The video seminar can be presented the same way, or it could be used in a Sunday School class over 5 weeks or similar manner.

What topics are covered in the Courageous Grandparenting Seminars

Five strategic sessions address the cultural challenges and how to counter them in a life that finishes well:

  1. WAKE UP! Building a Legacy That Matters
Do you really believe grandparenting matters? The Bible actually has a lot to say about the importance of grandparenting. We’ll also examine what the Gospel means and seven ways the Gospel ought to shape our grandparenting.
  2. TAKE UP! Two Pivotal Roles
In this session we will examine two pivotal roles expressed in the biblical teaching for grandparents—Storyteller and Gate Keeper. We will examine practical ways these roles can be put into practice in our families.
  3. BUILD UP! Unleashing the Power of Spoken Blessing
One of the most overlooked yet powerful tools God has given to us to help our children succeed in life and understand God’s purpose for them is the spoken blessing. This session unpacks the what, why and how of this powerful tool.
  4. GEAR UP! Parents and Grandparents: Allies or Adversaries?
A grandparent’s impact upon grandchildren rests largely on the relationship with we have with our adult children. This session discusses how to own up to our responsibility for maintaining healthy relationships and mending broken ones.
  5. STEP UP! Let’s Take the Hill Country
What does it mean to fight for our families? We explore how the Isacchar Factor relates to this battle, and then examine several practical ways to put into practice individually and as a church the things we have learned in this Seminar.

Should each person have a workbook?

We strongly recommend each attendee have their own workbook. There are blanks to fill in and space for notes.

We also recommend every attendee (or couple) who will be attending receive a copy of Courageous Grandparenting. In fact, if it is at all possible, get copies in advance and ask your participants to read the book prior to participating in the event. Perhaps you can include the cost of the book in the fee for the Seminar.

50 workbooks are included in the cost of the live seminar. The video seminar has both the workbook and Courageous Grandparenting books for 10 people.

Additional books are available on our website at quantity discounts.

What others have said

Once I contacted Cavin about coming I formed an instant bond with him. He was so amazing to work with when it came to his needs for the seminar. He was willing to do whatever was needed to effectively challenge grandparents to become intentional Christian grandparents. The day of the event was amazing. He connected immediately with the participants. His sessions were challenging, informative, and full of the Holy Spirit.

Senior Adults/Congregational Care Pastor, Highland Park Church

During the Seminar, founder Cavin Harper challenged grandparents to be part of a movement of godly men and women resolved to speak into the lives of the younger generations, the truth of God’s limitless grace. This Seminar provides practical information, resources and tools to help strengthen the grandparent/ grandchild relationship while encouraging all to pass on the gift of a godly legacy.

Judith Roberts

Seminar Chairman, Crossroad Church of the Nazarene; Chandler, AZ

We invited Cavin to present his Courageous Grandparenting conference as we launched a grandparenting ministry at our church in Snohomish, WA. With Cavin’s passionate and interactive teaching, it provided excellent tools and encouragement for grandparents to speak into the lives of their grandchildren and leave a legacy of faith and hope. We continue to cherish Cavin’s friendship and ministry to grandparents.

Bruce and Sharon Bailey

Snohomish Community Church

Cavin Harper expanded our vision for the strategic importance of our role as grandparents, laid a solid biblical framework for this responsibility, and gave us many practical tools for spiritually influencing and developing our grandchildren. By the end of the seminar, we recognized that an essential component of discipling our older adults as followers of Jesus Christ in this life stage is to equip them to courageously and appropriately step into their continuing role as spiritual influencers in the lives of their children and grandchildren.
